Introduction of Director:
My name is Eric Elofson, I’m a filmmaker from Seattle, and I’ve spent the last 3 years living, working and shooting in South East Asia while attending New York University’s graduate Film program. I’ve worked on feature films in Los Angeles, and Hong Kong, but this August I’m returning to Singapore to shoot my thesis film, and I need your help funding it. It’s the story of a Dutch tourist on death row in Singapore for possession of marijuana, and how he copes with being denied his final meal request.
Singapore has historically had one of the world’s highest execution rates per capita, and over half of their executions are for drug related crimes. In a lot of ways, this is a problem shared by my home country, the United States. Now I love Singapore, and I love America, but our drug laws and capital punishment procedures are outdated and cruel, and I hope that by making this film I can draw attention to these issues.
This film isn’t just about executions or drug laws, it’s about a man trapped in a system he doesn’t understand, and what he does to circumvent the rules to enjoy his last moments on Earth. I believe it’s a universal story of struggle within a rigid system, and I hope it will make my audience laugh, cry and think.
I wrote this story with the help of professors at NYU, and even work-shopped the script one-on-one with Oscar winning director Oliver Stone.
As for myself, my films have screened at festivals and won awards across the world (Festroia International, Palm Springs International, South by Southwest [SXSW], Chicago International, Salt Lake City International, Singapore International Short Film Awards, etc.). I’m also working with an extraordinary group of filmmakers from all over, including my award winning cinematographer Basil Mironer.
