Description:
Underscore Theatre is holding auditions for Proxy. Music and Lyrics by Alexander Sage Oyen. Book by Austin Regan, Rachel Franco, and Alexander Sage Oyen
Description:
Fifteen years ago, when she was a kid, Vanessa was almost murdered by her best friend. Now she is an investigative journalist in a bind, and she decides to do what anyone would do - exploit her personal story by disguising herself and interviewing her childhood best friend and attempted murderer. Vanessa must navigate her estranged family and confront her trauma in the age of going viral. Who has the right to tell our story? When we have been traumatized, how do we pass that pain onto others - and can we ever really heal?
Roles:
Vanessa (27, she/her, mezzo) - Edgy, morose, nihilistic. Complicated. Graduated with a degree in journalism from an Ivy League school that's so difficult to get into that none of us even applied. She gets irritated that people are never quite as smart as she is.
Doug (31, he/him, baritenor) - A Really Good Guy. Sure of himself. His family is rich, probably.
Martha (50, she/her, mezzo) - Vanessa and Sean's mother. A very good person.
Sean (25, he/him, tenor) - Enjoys long blunts, helping people and high notes. Dreams of leaving home, but has no intention of leaving home.
Jessie (27, she/her) - Has been in a mental institution for the last 15 years. Tried to murder her best friend when she was a kid. Trying her absolute best to come out of life a better person.
