Description:
New American Folk Theatre is seeking submissions for three roles for actors who sing and, possibly, play instruments to join the cast of their upcoming production of MY LIFE IS A COUNTRY SONG, written by Anthony Whitaker and Directed by Sarah Gise. The play runs on off nights November 3 - 21, on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at Chief O'Neill's Pub (3471 N Elston Ave) in the upstairs bar.
Rehearsals begin in August with music rehearsals based on actor availability. We would like to find a cast of actor/musicians to create a country band that would perform the show, but we are definitely considering strong vocalists (especially those with back up skills).
MY LIFE IS A COUNTRY SONG is a life-affirming musical about the importance of our chosen communities, with a score written in the style of classic 70'/80's country music. It is the story of a woman, Donna, and her recovery from domestic abuse and her re-entry into life, set in South Carolina in 1980. It was originally workshopped at Underscore Theatre's Chicago Musical Theatre Festival and has a cast of six actors who tell the story through the medium of a country concert. Three of the characters are already cast with NAFT Ensemble members.
The Characters
Jackie - Female-identifying, African-American actor. 25 - 30. High school friend and new neighbor of Donna Tate (the lead character) and wife of Freddy. Must sing lead and backup well. Instrumentalists encouraged.
Freddy - Male-identifying, open ethnicity (with the exception of African-American) actor. 25 - 30. He is Jackie's husband and boyfriend since high school. They have weathered being in a bi-racial relationship in South Carolina in the 70s and 80s. Must sing lead and backup well. Instrumentalists encouraged.
Shirley - Female-identifying, Caucasian actor, 40 - 50. She is Donna's landlord and grew up in the house she is now renting out to Donna. She is also a photographer for the local newspaper. Must sing lead and backup well. Instrumentalists encouraged.
Music rehearsals begin in late August.
