Description:

Baked!, a new original musical, will appear at the Chicago Musical Theatre Festival (CMTF) in February 2020. The musical has a contemporary score, similar in style to Dear Evan Hansen and Book of Mormon, and has been workshopped twice - once in San Francisco, CA and once in Chicago, IL. We are currently casting for four roles, and intend to cast an entirely Asian American cast.

When she doesn't receive the scholarship that would send her to her dream school, habitual overachiever Jane Huang, with the help of her best friend, joins forces with the class degenerate to build the greatest drug empire ever run by high schoolers. Kept in the dark are Jane's parents, whose inability to cope with their daughter leaving for college while maintaining a profit at their struggling Chinese bakery drives them pry and potentially unravel Jane's web of lies.

Baked! The Musical is a reflection on perfectionism, self-worth, and the question of what we owe the people we love. It will feature an all Asian-American cast, and the themes are born out of the writers' own experiences growing up as the children of immigrants in the US.

Characters:

Ebenezer "Z" O'Ryan (18, Asian American)
A bullshitting and self-obsessed, hate-able yet charming drug dealer who partners with Jane and Kasey.

Mingli Huang (mid-40s, M, East-Asian American)
Jane's light-hearted father who grows suspicious of Jane's "bake sales."

Yunzhou Huang (mid-40s, F, East-Asian American)
Jane's mother, who bears the grunt of the financial stress of running a store and sending money back home to her mother

Ensemble (any age 18+, Asian American)
Ensemble members will sing in chorus and play small speaking roles throughout the show.
