Description:
Seeking Performers for Podcast and Live Performance of Innovative Small-Scale Musical
The unique, small-scale musical comedy Romance Is Such A Funny Thing by Chicago playwright and composer Terry Breen premiered in February 2020 in Arlington Heights and was scheduled to run regularly at the theater space at The Book Market in Glenview during 2020. But because of the pandemic the show is postponed until it is safe again to be performed before a 200-person audience.
Currently, though, a podcast of the show is being produced, and four mid-30s-to-mid-40s performers are being sought to play two couples:
- one married (a sophisticated Broadway-style song and dance duo);
- one unmarried but in a serious relationship (a duo of pop/rock singer-songwriters).
Both couples are part of an offbeat seminar via songs (or "songinar") about love advice. But the troupe leader (the man in the unmarried couple) has commitment-phobia. Trying to convert him via an intervention as the songinar takes place is the comical problem in the play. Performers sing along with catchy and touching music tracks custom-made for the show. Those songs are featured on the album Romance Is Such A Funny Thing by Terry Breen, which is available for download online via iTunes, Spotify, YouTube, and other sources.
Romance Is Such A Funny Thing has already received major media attention (on the National Public Radio Show, "Weekend Radio"), as well in local Chicago media coverage. What's more, major Chicago broadcast media outlets are interested in coverage of the podcast and the eventual live shows.
The cast assembled to do the podcast would have the option of appearing in the live shows at The Book Market, possibly as early as January 2021.
