Description:
Director Kevin Long, associate professor of theatre at Harper College, is seeking an actress of color to play the role of Sally-Mae Carter in Too Heavy For Your Pocket by Jireh Breon Holder. You do not need to be a Harper College student to participate in the production.
In the summer of 1961, the Freedom Riders are embarking on a courageous journey into the Deep South. When twenty-year-old Bowzie Brandon gives up a life-changing college scholarship to join the movement, he'll have to convince his loved ones-and himself-that shaping his country's future might be worth jeopardizing his own. Set during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, two couples must contemplate justice, love, and responsibility on their own terms.
Sally-Mae Carter: Female, 20-26. A beautician married to Tony Carter. So slight one might almost not realize she is pregnant. Grounded and mature. Possesses a quiet strength. When she speaks, everyone listens. A gentle powerhouse with a deep well of emotion. Rational and diplomatic, she often plays the peacemaker in the group.
Kevin has also connected with the Freedom Rides museum located in Montgomery, Alabama. The cast will have the opportunity to connect with participants of the freedom rides.
Time Commitment:
Rehearsal Process: Rehearsals will begin with a virtual company meeting on Tuesday, January 5 from 7-10pm, and continue virtually through March 29. Starting March 30, we will be in person, following strict CDC guidelines, in the Blackbox Theatre at Harper College.
Production Dates: April 21-25, 2020. The production will be performed live and live streamed out our audiences.
