Seeking submissions for a new play development lab -- PUNKASS PASTRY, a semi-autobiographical tale that follows a group of activists leading up to the opening of the Chicago Peace Museum, asking the question not only of how peace can be achieved, but why do we strive for it?
This is a 2-day digital (on Zoom) workshop/recording on FEBRUARY 13th and 14th, 2021, co-directed by Frankie Leo Bennet and playwright John Jay -- there is a stipend
All roles listed below are still in consideration.
Arny*: 32-40, fluid sexuality, Male-identified, White; affectionate without sexual undertones, a determined dreamer with an awkward but love-filled presence.
Kismet*: 25-30, Nonbinary, Turkish, Asexual; expresses love for others mainly through the use of energy work, meditation... equally strives to fit in but also maintain peace
Tsunami: any age will be considered; this character defies numerical value - both youthful and wise; Female-identified, Japanese-American, playful and highly entertained by others. Fluid with her sexuality. hard to read but LOVES to read others.
Perrine*: 27 -32, African American, Straight, Female-identified, serving up real womyn realism. A survivor, she strives to let youthfulness and laughter define her life; at times, the aftermath makes this energy a struggle.
Tim/Doctor (two characters/one actor)*: 25-40; White, Male, Straight. Tim projects a person who has dealt with their anger and moved on, but deals with shame; Doctor is an equal mix selfishness/friendly. "I'm a good guy, fuck you if you don't believe me." like energy.
NOTE and CW: At times, the script references traumatic incidents, and in particular, sexual assault. None of this depicted on stage or in the virtual room, referenced only through the text by characters with an asterisk by their name.
