Description:
Redtwist Theatre is auditioning for the second production of our 2022-23 season, Jacqueline Goldfinger's Babel, directed by Rinska Carrasco-Prestinary. Provocative and unsettling, Babel follows two couples as they try to get pregnant in a world in which eugenics is the reality. This dark comedy explores the value society places on a child, our own free will, and the future generations of the human race. Goldfinger dares to ask questions that press the audience to think deeply about what is really important: our imperfect humanity or the progression of a perfect society? How far are we willing to go, and what is the cost of perfection?
About the Play:
Length: 90 Minutes, No Intermission
Time/Place: The Future / A City near a Beach (Think Black Mirror)
Our story takes place in a future society where racial, ethnic, and gender bias has been generally replaced in mainstream culture by genetic bias. We can now chart and judge the genetic code of every individual before birth. This play deals with sensitive topics- such as abortion.
Punctuation: The text is written as free verse poetry to communicate the fluid nature of the storytelling. Actors do not need to stop at the each of each line. No punctuation at the end of the line means that the character is either cut off or so caught up in their thoughts and/or emotions that they cannot finish the sentence.
Important: No one looks pregnant in this play.
Characters:
ANN, Female Identifying, Person of Color. Jamie's wife, Type A personality - Genetics tell her she is pretty much perfect but she fights to keep that image. She believes society must be protected at all costs.
RENEE, Female Identifying or Gender Queer, Race Flexible, 30s or 40s. Dani's wife, Type A nurturer - Will go above and beyond what most people would do to stay healthy, she's the "go to" friend. She's just effortlessly perfect. Not being perfect is new territory. Not knowing is new territory. Loves their wife with all their fiber but carries a truth that could break them all the same. Renee and Dani on the surface are considered the perfect couple nothing could possibly go wrong with them.
DANI, Female Identifying or Gender Queer, Race Flexible, 40s. Renee's wife - Tries to make light of hard situations. Strongly believes that society needs to be protected at all cost but not at their families' cost. Fights a conflict of what they think used to be the right choice and what they now know is the right choice. This rips the fabric of who they thought they were. Renee and Dani on the surface are considered the perfect couple nothing could possibly go wrong with them.
JAMIE/STORK - This role is already cast from the Redtwist Ensemble.
