Project Title | A Play about David Mamet Writing a Play about Harvey Weinstein |
Description:
Seeking NON-UNION actors for the first Chicago workshop production of A Play About David Mamet Writing a Play About Harvey Weinstein by Mathilde Dratwa.
The workshop production will be rehearsed over the course of four weeks and will be performed for no less than four and no greater than nine performances.
Synopsis: Francesca is writing a play. She's writing a play about David Mamet. And she wants to tear it all down. In this cerebral dark comedy, Dratwa confronts the theatre's institutionalized misogyny, its predators, and her own complicity as a white woman in the world of storytelling. When it comes to processing motherhood, generations of rage and sexism, nothing is too satirical, too violent, or too taboo in the safety of Francesca's mind. Content warning: this play includes violence and references to acts of sexual assault.
Characters:
FRANCESCA: Lead, Female, late-30s to early-40s, White. Francesca is an angry playwright and a mother. The play takes place inside her head and no one is safe. Francesca is heard over a god-mic for most of the play...until she storms on stage and tries to clean up the mess she made.
FRANCINE: Lead, Female, late-20s to early-30s, White. Francesca's alter-ego. She's the person that Francesca wishes she could be. She can do it all, act, write, direct, parent, kill, fly. She's basically Kate McKinnon.
ZOE: Lead, Female, mid- to late-20s, Black. Zoe is an actress and she's hustling. She's a millennial, she's a professional, and she has mixed feelings about David Mamet. Zoe isn't completely sure what's going on here, but she'll have plenty to say about it.
THE DAVIDS: Lead, Male, late-40s to early 60s, White. He's David Mamet, for better or worse. He's a fancy playwright and even fancies himself an act-or, a professor, an anti-hero, and a visionary. He dies, a lot, in this play.
