Xanadu Description:
Xanadu is all at once romantic comedy, celebration of '80s kitsch and a ridiculously moving, endlessly fun tale. This Tony Award-nominated, hilarious musical about following your dreams took audiences and critics by surprise when it transformed a cult classic movie, starring Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly, into the hottest comedy on Broadway. Xanadu follows the journey of a mythological muse, Kira, who descends from Mt. Olympus on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time - a roller disco - hey, it's 1980! When Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation and chaos abounds. With its score of pop gems and a script that celebrates musical theatre satire, Xanadu is a sparkling adventure that will roll into your heart.
Xanadu Character Descriptions: Some actors will play multiple roles and understudy roles internally and externally, so a demonstrated ability to portray characters with distinctive traits will be a positive as long as this facility combines with a feeling of authenticity to the story moment and honesty in intentions.
Kira (Clio): (20s-30s) the Greek heroine and loveable, young ingenue. She begins the play as Clio, the youngest and the most idealistic of the Muses. With the addition of leg warmers and an Australian accent, she quickly becomes Kira to help Sonny realize his dreams. She is ambitious, smart and like Sonny, pure of heart. Must be a strong actor, singer, dancer, and have strong roller-skating abilities.
Sonny Malone: (20s-30s) a young man from the beaches of California. He is wide-eyed, full of dreams and can be a bit sensitive; after all, he is an artist! While Sonny may not be the brightest, he is very sincere and earnest. An actor with excellent comedic timing, vocals, and roller-skating ability.
Danny Maguire (Zeus): (50s-60s) a real estate magnate and owner of the Xanadu theater. He should be a malleable actor who can evolve from being guarded about protecting the theater to becoming partners with Sonny and then betraying him. Danny should be an experienced actor/singer with decent dancing and tapping abilities. Does not roller-skate.
Calliope (Aphrodite): (40s-60s) the Muse of Epics, is Melpomene's "Wing-Muse." She is equally devious and listens closely to her sister's direction. Calliope is a great role for an actor who can both sing and act well with great comedic timing and should be a perfect complement to Melpomene. Does not roller-skate.
Melpomene (Medusa): (40s-60s) the Muse of Tragedy, is the eldest of the Muses and is most responsible for plotting against Kira. Strong acting and singing required, with great comedic timing. Does not roller-skate.
Thalia (Siren; Young Danny; Tubes Singer; Cyclops): (age open) a fellow Muse with excellent acting, singing, dancing, tapping, and roller-skating abilities. Euterpe (Siren; Andrews Sister; Thetis): (age open) a fellow Muse with excellent acting, singing, dancing, and roller- skating abilities.
Erato (Siren; Andrews Sister; Eros; Hera): (age open) a fellow Muse with excellent acting, singing, dancing, and roller- skating abilities.
Terpsicore (Siren; Tubes Singer: Hermes; Centaur): (age open) a fellow Muse with excellent acting, singing, dancing, and roller-skating abilities.
Directorial Notes on Casting: We're looking for talent with excellent comedic timing, versatility, roller-skating abilities, and high energy. Please note that we will have skating and dancing calls, as well as character/vocal calls on each callback day. If you own skates to bring to callbacks, great! Otherwise, we will supply the skates.
