Description:
CenterStage in Lake Forest is now accepting video auditions for our early August through mid- September 2023 production of William Shakespeare's The Tempest.
The Tempest is a masterful comedy of betrayal and revenge, magic and true love, airy spirits and earthbound fools, containing some of Shakespeare's most glorious language.
SEEKING:
Seeking eleven actors of all body types, ethnicities, genders, etc.
PROSPERO or PROSPERA: the rightful Duke of Milan; a mighty magician and a wise, virtuous philosopher; however, he must show that his desire for vengeance could destroy him if he does not control it and learn forgiveness for the wrongs done him in the past. (Can be played by a male or a female.) Age: 40+
MIRANDA: daughter to Prospero; she has seen no man save her father; loving, kind, sensitive, compassionate; she speaks her mind and is not afraid to take risks for those she loves. Age: late teens through twenties
FERDINAND: son to the Queen/King of Naples; so gallant a spirit that Miranda has "no ambition to see a goodlier man." Age: teens to twenties
ARIEL: an airy Spirit; servant of Prospero; symbolic of the magician's control of the upper elements of air & fire; can be played by a female or male (Some melodic singing)
CALIBAN: a savage and deformed slave; the earthly spawn of devil and witch; a foil to the delicate Ariel, and symbolic of the magician's control of the lower elements of earth and water-part man, part sea-creature. (Some "character" singing-not necessarily melodic or on pitch.)
STEPHANO: Alonsa/o's "drunken butler," made loquacious and courageous by the "celestial liquor" that has "pickled" him; slapstick humor; seduced by ambition and drink to try to seize control of the island with Caliban's help (some "character" singing-not necessarily melodic or on pitch.)
TRINCULO: Alonsa/o's Jester; "reeling ripe" and dull with drink; a "jesting monkey," a "motley fool," a "scurvy clown"; slapstick humor; seduced by ambition and drink to join Stephano in his attempt to seize control of the island with Caliban's help (Some "character" singing-not necessarily melodic or on pitch.)
ANTONIO or ANTONIA: Prospero's wicked, unnatural, and unrepentant brother (or sister), led by evil ambition to usurp the dukedom of Milan and to "expel remorse and nature."
SEBASTIAN: traitorous brother of Alonsa/o, Queen/King of Naples; and cohort of Antonio/Antonia.
ALONSA or ALONSO: Queen (King) of Naples; a well-intentioned, but somewhat weak-willed ruler; capable of sincere remorse and true penitence; as mother (father) of Ferdinand, (s)he must be a sympathetic character, even though convinced to take part in the past crime against Prospero.
GONZALA or GONZALO: an honest, loyal old Counsellor; the "good old" noblewoman (or nobleman) and philosopher, who acted as Prospero's "true preserver" when the duke and his infant daughter were expelled from Milan by Antonio/a; somewhat comic in his/her loquacity.
