Description:
Teatro Vista is accepting video submissions for their upcoming production of ¡Bernarda!, by Emilio Williams, based on the classic by Federico Garcia Lorca, and directed by Co-Artistic Director, Wendy Mateo.
¡Bernarda!
Williams' turn at the adaptation, attempts to disrupt the rigid way in which this story has been told countless times before. Lorca's classic is a story about the repression of women under the thumb of Catholicism, told through an intergenerational cast, led by the matriarch, Bernarda Alba. Bernarda's religious fanaticism perpetuates the oppression of her own daughters and ultimately leads to the demise of their home.

Characters
Bernarda: The matriarch. Pragmatic. A woman who will do anything to maintain the illusion of a stable home.
Angustias: late 30s - the eldest of the sisters, yet the most naive of them all. An eternal optimist.
Magdalena: 30s, sarcastic and dark. Gets enjoyment out of pushing her sister's buttons.
Martirio: late 20s, the most sensitive of all of the sisters. Means well but has eternal middle sister syndrome. *May double in another role
Adela: early 20s, still acts like a spoiled teenager, rebellious against her mother's and society's pragmatism.
Carmelita: The younger housekeeper. Poncia treats Carmelita the way Bernarda treats her own daughters.
Poncia: The senior housekeeper. As pragmatic as Bernarda, but with a deeper understanding of the reality of the world and what is going on in the house.
Maria Josefa: Bernarda's mother. A product of the oppression experienced by women in society. Shows signs of dementia. *May double in another role

Some thoughts from our director, Wendy:
This adaptation doesn't take itself too seriously, even against these characters' environment and circumstances. These characters are always being judged by their society. How do they react to constantly being watched by others? How do they move, knowing that their life is real to them, but only entertainment to the outside world?
