Description:
The Gwydion Theatre Company will be holding general auditions for their 2023-2024 season, running at the Greenhouse Theatre Center.
When: August 8th from 1pm-4pm
Where: The Utopian Theatre Asylum (TUTA) located at 4670 Manor Ave, just off the Francisco Brown Line stop.
Show 1: 'The Zoo Story' by Edward Albee, directed by Morgan Wilson
Rehearsals begin August 15th and run Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from 10am-2pm. Opening night is September 27th, and will run until October 14th.
Roles:
Peter- 30-60 years old, upper class man working in a publishing firm. He finds difficulty relating to Jerry, but ultimately is driven to an understanding.
Show 2: Can't Pay? Won't Pay by Dario Fo, original translation by Fabrizio Danielle, adapted by Grayson Kennedy and Ember Sappington.
Rehearsals begin October 25th and the show will run from November 27th-December 17th.
Roles:
Antonia - 20-30 years old, Working class housewife, frustrated with rising food prices begins a spree of grocery store robberies to rebel against the unfair economic conditions.
Margherita- 20-30 years old, friend to Antonia, aids her in the robbery spree. She is more logical than Antonia, but lacks her passion.
Giovanni- 30-40 years old, Antonia's husband, to a fault he holds honor above all. He is a man's man and is hyper critical of Antonia's actions.
Luigi- 30-40 years old, Margherita's husband, friend to Giovanni, working class man, has a difficult time expressing himself, especially to his wife. Often confuses frustration and anger.
Senior- 60-75 years old, Giovanni's father, a voice from the previous generation, wise and soft spoken.
Policeman: Any age, police officer indoctrinated into the oppressive governmental regime.
Detective: Any age, Investigator, builds case against Antonia and Margherita. (WILL DOUBLE AS GRAVE DIGGER)
Show 3: 'Waiting for Lefty' by Clifford Odetts, directed by Grayson Kennedy
Rehearsals begin February 2nd. Shows will run March 3rd-24th
Joe: 20-40 years old. Married to Edna, initially opposed to the strike, becomes a leader in the union.
Edna: 20-40 years old. Joe's wife, passionate and loud, she is at her wits end.
Harry Fatt: 30-50 years old. Overweight, manipulative, and vain. Antagonist of the play, anti-labor union, spends the play trying to dissuade the union from striking.
Sid: 18-25 years old, BIPOC, young member of the union, forced to leave his fiance, Florrie, because of her family's response to an interracial couple. He is charming and sweet to the core.
Florrie: 18 years old. Young, stupid and in love. Represents the youthful hope for a better tomorrow. She is a dreamer, and is head over heels in love with Sid.
Irv: Florrie's brother. Despises Sid, and ultimately forces her to end things with Sid. Is the breadwinner for his mother and sister, also deeply effected by labor conditions.
Miller: 20-30 years old. Man of upstanding morals. Previously worked in chemistry, was fired for refusing to develop chemical weapons, now works in the taxi driver union. Angrily berates Fayette after he implies that he spy on his coworkers.
Fayette: 50-60 years old. Miller's superior, he does not operate on morality, but simply works to survive. He compromises human values for the safety of his work life.
Dr. Barnes: 50's-70's Administrator at the hospital that Dr. Benjamin works at. Is forced by the board to fire Dr. Benjamin because of his jewish heritage. This brings him great pain. He is the voice of a previous generation, and helps inspire Dr. Benjamin to make a difference.
Dr. Benjamin: 30-40 years old. Jewish. Diligent and passionate, Benjamin quickly rose the ranks among surgeons at the hospital. Comes to Dr. Barnes to protest the removal of one of his patients from the ward. He illustrates the classism within the hospital system. Is fired due to his religion, and joins the taxi cab driving union to make ends meet.
Agate: 20-40 years old. From poverty, he inspires the union to take action and to stop "Waiting for Lefty". Through a passionate speech at the end of the labor meeting, he becomes the defacto leader of the union.
Tom Clayton- 20-40's. Labor union spy, hired by Fatt to dissuade the strike. Is exposed when Joe recognizes him as his estranged brother.
