Description:
Oil Lamp Theater is seeking submissions for the Chicago premiere production of Rooted by Deborah Zoe Laufer. Elizabeth Mazur Levin, Artistic Director, will direct. The production will run March 21-May 5 (with a possible 1 week extension through 5/12/24) with performances Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings (7:30pm) and matinees on Saturdays and Sundays (3pm).
DESCRIPTION
Connecting better with plants than with people, Emery has lived in her treehouse for over a decade. Her only connection to the outside world is her overbearing sister Hazel, and the few subscribers of her Youtube channel where she documents her botanical research. Recently she has amassed thousands of followers who appear at the base of the treehouse and declare her their leader. Confronted with the fact that she is viewed by many to be a healer and savior, Emery wrestles with the power of plants, her new found fame, and what it means to be human.
Auditions by appointment only will be held on Sunday, October 29 from 7:00-10:00pm at the theater which is located at 1723 Glenview Road, Glenview, IL.
Callbacks are by invitation only and will be held on Monday, November 6 beginning at 7:00pm.
Character Type/Restrictions:
We are casting all roles:
EMERY HARRIS: 40's-70's. Lives in a treehouse. Uses a walker to get around. She's performing scientific experiments on the consciousness of plants. Plants make sense. People are confusing. And loud. And hard to read. And sometimes they touch you which is awful. So much safer to be alone with her plants.
HAZEL: 40's-70's. Emery's older sister. She's been a waitress at the Millerville Diner for way too long, taken care of Emery even longer. Frustrated and powerless, a rage roiling just beneath the surface. She could have done so much with her life. Is it too late?
LUANNE: Early 20's. Incredibly sweet and guileless. Hungry for joy, for a tribe, for something larger to believe in.
Rehearsals will begin Tuesday, January 30 and are typically held from 7:00-10:00pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and 10:00am-1:00pm on Saturdays until tech which begins on Saturday, March 16.
