CAST BREAKDOWN:
Florence: (identifies female) This role has been precast.
Freddie: (identifies male) Rock tenor to C. An American chess champion. Arrogant and temperamental, but a genius; his chess playing is revolutionary. Has a sense of artistry along with obsessiveness.
Anatoly: (identifies male) Baritone to G#. A Russian chess champion. Unexpectedly charming. He doesn't seem the romantic hero at first but becomes one through his personality. An intelligent, feeling, and passionate man.
Molokov: (identifies male) Bass down to F#. Not a fake, comic, Russian. Intellectually formidable. Seemingly a father figure to Florence. Anatoly's chess "second".
Svetlana: (identifies female) Strong Belt. Anatoly's wife. Domestic, wholesome, homey. A Dramatic contrast to Florence - not a contemporary cosmopolitan woman.
Walter: (identifies male) Bass-baritone down to G#. A marketing agent. Seemingly respectful, substantial, trustworthy.
Arbiter: (identifies male) Rock high baritone up to A. International businessman. Smooth, but with a quick temper.
Ensemble: (identifies male or female) Need to be able to develop multiple distinct characters. In addition to singing as an ensemble there are many ensemble parts with lines and musical solo lines.
