Description:
The Gwydion Theatre Company is seeking actors for all roles for our production of Clifford Odets' 'Waiting for Lefty' directed by Artistic Director, Grayson Kennedy. The show will open on February 8th for Chicago Theatre Week and will run until the 24th of February at The Greenhouse Theater Center. Rehearsals will be 6-10pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 1-5pm on Sundays.
Synopsis: Waiting for Lefty is a one-act play comprised of a series of vignettes addressing the wide spread effects of economic inequality. The scenes of the play exist as memories of members of the New York Taxicab Union as they attempt to unite and form a strike.
Auditions will be held at 'The Greenhouse Theater Center' located at 2257 N Lincoln Avenue on December 19th from 1-6pm. BIPOC actors are strongly encouraged to submit. Please bring a contemporary or American classic monologue no longer than 2 minutes. Actors may be asked to cold read. Time slots will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis.
Roles:
Harry Fatt - The plays antagonist, corrupt Union leader hellbent on preventing a workers strike. Large bodied man with a temper (40-60 years old). *THIS ACTOR WILL ALSO PLAY THE ROLE OF FAYETTE*
Joe - Non-Committee member of the union, he is fearful of the strike, but ultimately chooses to support due to an inspirational argument with his wife, Edna *role has been cast
Edna - Joe's wife, angry and politically charged, Edna insists upon the strike for the sake of her children's future *role has been cast
Fayette - Head of an industrial chemistry firm, tries to persuade Miller to begin research on poison gas for modern warfare. Distrustful and bigoted he also beckons Miller to spy on his colleagues of color. *PLAYED BY THE ACTOR WHO PLAYS FATT
Miller - Young savvy chemist, offered a significant raise by Fayette to work on poisonous gas for chemical warfare. Good at heart, Miller sacrifices his job to uphold his pacifist morals. Due to the lack of work, he becomes a cab driver and joins the union and is elected to the comittee. (late 20's- early 30's)
Irv - Florrie's protective older brother, urges her to leave her fiancee, Sid, because of his low-income as a taxi driver. Good at heart, but is capable of sacrifice. *ACTOR WILL ALSO PLAY GUNMAN (20's-30's)
Florrie - Irv's younger sister, innocent and childlike, represents the hopeful romanticism of youth. She refuses to leave her fiance, Sid, even though he has been disapproved by her family. (18-21)
Sid - Florrie's bashful fiancee. He is aware of the rift he is causing within Florrie's family due to his presence, and ultimately decides to leave her so she can pursue a better life. A non-comittee member of the Taxi Cab union, eager for the strike. BIPOC (20's-30's)
Clayton - A paid union spy sent to try and disrupt the comittee's plan to strike, he is unaware that his brother, Keller, is also a member of the union and gets ousted by him and thrown out of the meeting *role has been cast
Dr. Benjamin - A young and talented surgeon, he is removed from his patient because due to nepotism and is fired due to the hospital board's rampant antisemitism. Unemployed, he finds himself taking work as a taxi driver and gets elected as head of the union committee. (20's-30's)
Dr. Barnes - Benjamin's superior, is angered at the hospital board and the general state of medical practice in America. Encourages Benjamin to fight against the system and dismantle the misguided hatred within the upper class. (40-60 years old).
Agate Keller - Persuasive and charismatic, he delivers the plays final speech. After finding out Lefty has been murdered by union racketeers he attacks the gunman and rally's the union to confirm the strike. (20's-40's)
