Description:
Haven Chicago is holding auditions for Hedwig and the Angry Inch by John Cameron Mitchell | music and lyrics by Stephen Trask. Directed by JD Caudill
This groundbreaking Obie-winning Off-Broadway smash that took Broadway by storm in its Tony Award-winning 2014 revival also won multiple awards for its hit film adaptation. It tells the story of "internationally ignored song stylist" Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall smashing East German rock 'n' roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation, which has left her with just "an angry inch." This outrageous and unexpectedly hilarious story is dazzlingly performed by Hedwig (nee Hansel) in the form of a rock gig/stand-up comedy routine backed by the hard-rocking band "The Angry Inch." It's a rocking ride, funny, touching, and ultimately inspiring to anyone who has felt life gave them an inch when they deserved a mile.

Character Type/Restrictions:
HEDWIG (Vocal range: A2-C4; strong rock belt)
Seeking trans or non-binary performers; any ethnicity or body type; 18+. A ferocious force of nature, Hedwig is equal parts rock goddess, stand-up comedian, and vulnerable human being. The role requires strong improvisational skills, audience interaction, moving confidently in high heels, and the stamina to carry the show while rarely leaving the stage. This role includes references to sexual abuse, genital-centered discussions of gender, and various states of undress at the comfort level of the performer. (An intimacy/violence designer will be on the production team.)
YITZHAK (Vocal range: Db4 - A5; strong high belt)
Seeking women or non-binary performers of any/all gender expressions; any ethnicity or body type; 18+.
Hedwig's husband and roadie/back-up singer. Bound by the constraints of traditional masculinity but longs to explore a more feminine side. Yitzhak has a killer voice but must always be hidden behind Hedwig.

(1) Please perform a a verse and a chorus of a song in the style of the show that shows off your ability to play clear intentions/objectives, tells a story (narratively or emotionally), and works a crowd - whether that's through vulnerability, glamorousness, rockstar vibes, or any other way you captivate an audience.
(2) Before you perform that song, please share a one-minute story that ties to the song you sing.
*Note from the Director*
"I totally don't care if the story is real from your life or completely made up, that's not what's important to me - what I'm looking for is to see how you weave in and out of conversation about life and singing a song, much like Hedwig does throughout the entire show. More than anything, though, have fun and show me material that excites you!" - JD
