Pop-Up Productions- in collaboration with the South Asia Institute - is currently seeking actors for Next to Normal! A twist on an Pulitzer-Prize winning musical, this production will center around a South Asian family, presenting their story with nuance and heart.

The characters of Diana, Dan, Gabe, and Natalie will be cast with South Asian identifying actors. The roles of Dr. Fine/Dr. Madden and Henry are open ethnicity. Please look at the attached google form for more information on character descriptions.

Next to Normal, with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, explores how one suburban household copes with crisis and mental illness. Dad's an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling bipolar disorder for 16 years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family's story with love, sympathy and heart.

In this production, Pop Up Productions is reimagining this story to have the "typical American family" be one belonging to a first-generation South Asian - Hindu- Punjabi household. This production explores the question: In times of struggle, where do you choose to put your faith? Family? Friends? Science? Religion? Ultimately, how do we choose to believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel?
