Description:
Seeking South Asian theatre artists for a workshop of Monkey by Shail Modi, as part of the Avalanche Theatre Next Draft Series, in partnership with Silk Road Community Center!
Avalanche Theatre develops new plays by Chicago playwrights through their Next Draft Series of play workshops and performances, building community through uplifting emerging voices. The Next Draft Series is a play incubator that takes place over the course of 3-4 months with readings, feedback sessions, and mentorship, culminating in a workshop production of the plays at the end of the process.
We're excited to be partnering with Silk Road Cultural Center to develop Monkey by Shail Modi. Monkey follows Kai, a young poet with a monkey on his back. He thinks that completing his late mother's final rites might lift that weight, and figures returning to India for his father's remarriage to a nice man named Mike is a meaningful and proper time to do so. Things get complicated when his mom's ashes get lost in transit, and his dad seems to have other priorities.
For this process, we are seeking a director, dramaturg, and actors to fill the following roles:
Kai : M, 20s-30s, South Asian
