Project Title | Poor Unfortunate Roles: A Miscast Cabaret |
Description:
What is a "miscast" cabaret?
In a miscast cabaret, you perform roles you wouldn't typically be considered for! The results are sometimes hilarious, and sometimes thought-provoking.
This includes:
-Roles you're wrong for
A female-presenting Gaston, a male-presenting Glinda, a 45-year old Annie, a baritone Marian Paroo, a non-dancer Velma Kelly... the only limit is your imagination!
-Roles society has TOLD you you're wrong for
There is no reason why a plus-sized performer shouldn't play Elle Woods, a performer of color shouldn't play Elsa, or a disabled performer shouldn't play Tarzan. Defy your "type," choose your dream song, and knock it out of the park!
Please note this is a volunteer/unpaid performance opportunity.
Tips for Song Selection
In this cabaret, we build the set list around what YOU audition with! This means that song selection is crucial. Last year, song selection was an enormous element in the casting process - it should be your #1 consideration.
Please consider:
1. Does this song stand alone? This is a cabaret. Will the audience enjoy it even if they don't understand the context of the show?
2. Is this a clever "miscast"? Will the audience get the joke or the social statement? Even obscure material can be appreciated if the miscast is clever.
3. If it's not a clever "miscast," the material needs to be either 1) a well-known fan favorite, or 2) extraordinarily well-performed. For example, if you're a woman who can knock Waving Through a Window out of the park, the audience will enjoy it!
Can I submit duet/trio/ensemble auditions?
Yes. Feel free to send duet/trio/ensemble videos.
When are auditions due?
