On the surface, TOM seems to have it all: a successful career, a nice home, and a loving family. However, he feels deeply dissatisfied and restless, and he is grappling with the dissolution of his marriage. Tom is charming, engaging and easy to talk to, but his charm often hides his selfish tendencies and inner struggles with honesty and vulnerability. He longs for personal happiness, which he lacks in his marriage to BETH.
Play Synopsis: Dinner with Friends is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play that delves into the intricacies of intimacy in friendship and marriage. The story revolves around two couples, Gabe and Karen, and their best friends, Tom and Beth. Gabe and Karen are life-and-work partners in the food literature industry who boast an aspirational relationship . Tom has known Gabe since college, and Beth and Karen have been good friends just as long. Tom and Beth were set up by their friends on one fateful trip to Martha's Vineyard and the rest was history... When Tom and Beth announce their impending divorce, it sends shockwaves through their close-knit group, forcing each one to re-evaluate the nature of their bonds. Friendships are challenged and made raw as this drama moves through a subtle examination of why we keep people in our lives, and what it means when we change direction. Through recollections, arguments, impassioned grasps for personal freedom, honest and painful revelations, each of them rediscovers the complexities of love, loyalty and the evolving nature of human connections.
