Blank Theatre Company is seeking actors to submit for their production of A Bright Room Called Day by Tony Kushner. This production will be Directed by Blank Theatre's co-artistic director Danny Kapinos
AUDITION INFORMATION
Auditions by appointment will be held on Sunday, August 18th from 4:00-8:00pm and Monday, August 19th from 6:00-10:00pm at the Greenhouse Theatre Center. The space is located at 2257 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL 60614.
Callbacks will be held by individual appointment on Sunday, August 25th from 4:00-8:00pm and Monday, August 26th from 6:00-10:00pm at the same location.
SEEKING:
1930s BERLIN
AGNES EGGLING - she/her, 30s. Bit player/character actress in the German film industry. At heart a passionate leftist but lacks the courage of her convictions. Caring and forgiving to a fault, she is terrified of the change she passionately believes in.
PAULINKA ERDNUSS - she/her, 20s-30s. Actress in the German film industry; a featured player on her way to becoming a minor star. Has a strong sense of right and wrong but wishes she didn't-she refuses to be caught being her truly kind self.
GREGOR "BAZ" BAZWALD - THIS ROLE IS CAST - SEEKING UNDERSTUDY ONLY he/him, 30s. A gay man who works for the Berlin Institute for Human Sexuality. Provocative and cynical edges hide a sentimental interior. Puts on a brave face but is terrified of what the future looks like for him.
VEALTNINC HUSZ - he/him, 30s-40s. Cinematographer. Hungarian exile. Missing an eye. Agnes's husband. An avowed revolutionary willing to die for his cause.
ANNABELLA GOTCHLING - she/her, 30s-40s. Communist artist and graphic designer. Staunchly devoted to her cause and able to step back and look at things with perspective. She may seem distant or impersonal at first, but her politics is her way of caring for others and she sees more than she lets on.
ROSA MALEK - she/her, 20s. Minor functionary of the KPD (Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands). Willing to compromise and eager to play the "good cop."
TRAUM - he/him, 20s. Slightly higher-ranking functionary of the KPD. No-nonsense and the "good cop" counterpart to Rosa.
DIE ALTE - she her, 60+. Agnes's upstairs neighbor, hungry and showing signs of dementia. She has lived through hard times and only wants to survive.
GOTTFRIED SWETTS - he/him, any age. The devil, dressed as an ordinary German businessman. Frightening in how normal and unfrightening he seems.
1990 BERLIN
ZILLAH KATZ - she/her, 30s. A contemporary American Jewish woman. BoHo/East Village New Wave with Anarcho-Punk tendencies.
ROLAND - he/him, 20s. Zillah's boyfriend, speaks only German. Totally unaware of the deeper story he is taking part in. May double with another role/roles.
This production will utilize understudies for all roles.
Most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the above character descriptions. However limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be inclusive as possible, and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they are most interested in being seen for. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities.

Rehearsals: Sundays-Thursdays 7:00-10:00pm through 11/27/24
Tech: 6:00-11:00pm Monday - Thursday 12/2-12/5
Rehearsals will be held at City Lit Theatre, 1020 W Bryn Mawr Ave
PERFORMANCES
Previews Friday 12/6/24 at 7:30pm and Sunday 12/8/24 at 2:00pm.
Opening Tuesday 12/10/24 at 7:30 PM
Closing Sunday, 1/5/25
Performances Thursday-Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2:00pm. One Monday performance at 7:30pm on 12/30/24.
This production will be performed in the Downstairs Studio Theatre at the Greenhouse Theatre Center, 2257 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL 60614. There is a $300 stipend for this production. This production is Jeff Eligible. Please note: An MRE will be included in this contract. We will have NO 10 out of 12s during this rehearsal process.
Sides will be provided if given an appointment.
