Meat Machine Ensemble Theatre is holding auditions for Phedre.
Synopsis:
Jean Racine's classic and gripping telling of Phedre delves into the human psyche, exploring the tumultuous emotions of its characters. Set in ancient Greece, during a time of political turmoil, the play tells the story of Phedre, who is consumed by a forbidden love for her stepson, Hippolytus. As her secret passion comes to light, it sets off a chain of events marked by jealousy, deceit, and ultimately, tragedy.
The roles of Phedre and Oenone have been cast, but we are still seeking understudies for these roles.
Character Descriptions:
Phedre (U/S) : The queen tormented by her illicit love for her stepson, Hippolyte. A complex character torn between duty and desire. 30s-40s, femme or non-binary
Oenone (U/S) : Phedre's loyal nurse and confidante, who becomes an enabler of her mistress's destructive passion. 30s-50s masc, femme or non- binary
Hippolytus: The virtuous and honorable stepson of Phedre, unaware of her feelings and devoted to his own moral code. 20s - 30s, masc, femme, or non-binary
Theseus: The king and husband of Phedre, whose return from a journey sets the tragedy in motion. 30s-50s masc
Aricia: A young princess of the royal blood, who has caught the eye of Hippolyte. Represents innocence and virtue. 20s-30s, femme or non-binary
Theramene: Hippolytus' tutor and advisor, representing wisdom and reason in the chaotic unfolding of events. 20s - 30s, masc, femme, or non-binary
Ismene: A confidante of Aricia, offering support and counsel. 20s-30s, femme or non-binary
Some roles might double as Ensemble/ understudy
