Project Title | Funny, Like An Abortion |
Description:
Video submissions for Funny, Like An Abortion by Rachel Bublitz are now being accepted. FLAA is a co-production between Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble and Fat Theatre Project, directed by Eileen Tull. Set in a future America where even saying the word "abortion" is a crime, Monroe has just discovered that she is unexpectedly and unwantedly pregnant. She invites her best friend Jade over for a surprise abortion party in this darkly funny, devastatingly prescient play. Performances will be at Chicago Danztheatre at 1650 W Foster Avenue. This venue is only accessible by about a dozen stairs. There is no elevator available for patrons or artists.
CONTENT DISCLOSURE:
The play contains frank discussion of misogyny, pregnancy, reproduction, abortion, and the oppression of freedom of speech. It also contains strong language, discussions of violence, and mention of self-harm.
PAY:
$300 stipend plus a percentage of ticket sales
ROLES:
Monroe, she/her, mid twenties. Makes bad jokes. Is learning to juggle. May or may not be any good at it.
Jade, she/her, close in age to Monroe. Has legitimate concerns and distress over how to actually help her friend.
We are also casting for understudies.
This rehearsal process will be very physical in nature. This show is a marathon. Actors do not need to be trained in any specific type of physical work, but should be prepared and willing to explore movement in new ways. In the script, Monroe must juggle (to varying success), and both actors dance (to varying success). Though these skillsets are encouraged, it is not necessary to have experience in juggling or dancing to audition. Fat actors are especially encouraged to audition, though there is no mention of either character's body size in the script. The characters' pronouns are she/her, but actors of all gender identities are encouraged to apply.
