SEEKING:
Charity Hope Valentine - she/her - 20s-30s - A hopelessly romantic but comically unfortunate dance hall hostess. In spite of her bad luck and poor lot in life, she remains optimistic that a change in fortune is just around the corner. Must be a strong dancer.
Helene - she/her - 20s-30s - One of Charity's best friends, a fellow hostess at the dance hall. A more cynical and realistic counterpoint to Charity's point of view. Must be a strong dancer.
Nickie - she/her - 20s-30s - One of Charity's best friends, a fellow hostess at the dance hall. A more cynical and realistic counterpoint to Charity's point of view. Must be a strong dancer.
Vittorio Vidal - he/him - 20s-30s - A movie star who Charity believes might be a ticket to her new life. It's clear to everyone but Charity that he uses his charm and star quality to use people around him.
Oscar Lindquist - he/him - 20s-30s - THIS ROLE IS CAST - SEEKING UNDERSTUDY ONLY - A nervous and claustrophobic square, the opposite of the usual clientele at the dance hall. On the surface, he should appear a stable influence on Charity's life, but he ultimately lacks the courage to be his best self.
Herman - he/him - 30s-50s - Owner of the dance hall. His gruff demeanor hides a warm and sentimental core.
Daddy Brubeck - he/him - any age - Founder of the Rhythm of Life Church. A hippie who loves to inspire his followers.
ENSEMBLE - A small ensemble will double in a variety of small roles, including dancers and clients at the dance hall. All should be strong dancers, and all will play featured speaking roles.
This production will utilize both internal and external understudies for all roles.
Most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the above character descriptions. However limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be inclusive as possible, and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they are most interested in being seen for. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities.
Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns or if there are any accommodations we can provide.
Covid policy - We will not be hiring any unvaccinated artists. If cast, you will be required to provide proof of vaccination. Everyone behind the table is fully vaccinated. Blank will continue to evaluate best practices to ensure the safety of our artists and audience members.
