Summary

The play is set in New Orleans. Stanley Kowalski, a tough, almost animalistic working class man in his late 20s, is married to Stella. Blanche DuBois, Stella's sister, comes to stay at their place and this way upsets Stanley's and Stella's already stormy relationship. Blanche, a fading, promiscuous, neurotic and delusional Southern Belle from Laurel, Mississipi, hides a dark past. She claims she is taking some time off from her teaching job when in fact has escaped her town when she it was discovered that she had an affair with a 17 year old boy. Also her husband committed suicide after she discovered that he was having a homosexual relationship.

The play mainly focuses on the conflict between Stanley and Blanche. Stanley investigates Blanche's past with the help of a friend and discovers her real past. Stella had refused to listen to him throughout the play and always sided with her sister.

In this monologue Stanley finally confronts his wife Stella and tells her about her sister's dark past and what really brought Blanche to New Orleans.
