Summary
Eddie (Ron Howard) is a 9 year old boy whose mother has just died. His widowed father, Tom Corbett (Glenn Ford), still has to adjust to his new bachelor life and hires a housemate, Mrs. Livingston. Even if not ready to replace his wife, several women enter Tom's life, his neighbor Elizabeth Marten, a volunteer nurse, Dolly Daly, a Miss Montana Pageant hopeful and Rita Behrens, a chic fashion designer.
One night Eddie gets very sick and his father asks Elizabeth for help. She stays over and sleeps in Eddie's room all night.
This scene takes place the next morning. Elizabeth has just woke up and Tom offers her some breakfast. They first talk about Eddie but when Tom offers to pay her for her services she gets very upset and expresses her frustrations for him always wanting to keep things impersonal between them. He tries to apologize, to no avail...
