Summary
Bree Daniels (Jane Fonda) is a high class call girl. One of her past clients, Tom Grunenam, has disappeared and private detective John Klute (Donald Sutherland) investigates. Bree Daniels helps him in the investigation and they develop a relationship.
In this monologue Bree Daniels tries to tell her psychologist how she feels about John Klute. She is confused because she has never had feelings like that before:
"I feel physically. That's what's different. I mean, I feel--My body feels. I enjoy, uh, making love with him....which, uh, is a very baffling and bewildering thing for me...".
She likes him but at the same time wants to end it and go back to the way she was before:
"...all the time, I keep feeling the need to destroy, to--to--break it off, to go back to the comfort of being numb again...."
She doesn't feel in control anymore the way she was with her clients and doesn't know how to feel about it. She wants to keep it but at the same time she feels the need to destroy it.

Comments
The main emotion in this monologue is frustration. She finds it hard to express what she feels for John Klute to her psychologist. She also has conflicting emotions, she loves him, he makes her feel good but she is scared of getting close to him. She is afraid to let go of the emotional "numbness" she had when she just worked as a prostitute and she never got attached to anybody.
Jane Fonda does a great job. She puts a lot of thinking in her delivery, she uses a lot of pauses and gestures to express her confusion and frustration.
