This movie is a collection of stories set in Los Angeles. This story concerns Tess Trainer, an old jazz singer, and Zoe Trainer, her daughter who is a cello player. Zoe always wanted to know more about her father that she never got to meet. All her mother ever told her is that "he was a prick". Zoe and her mother don't have a relationship and they hardly talk. In this scene Tess comes back home early in the morning from the club where she sang all night. Zoe is playing the cello and ignores her as she talks to her and keeps playing. Tess enters her room where Zoe is playing and tells her about a time in Kansas City when her father O.D.'d....as she tells her the story she slowly falls asleep....

Excerpt
TESS TRAINER: "What are you doing up so early? Did I leave a roach here? Did you see a roach here? Damn. (Sighs) (Sits on a bed). Had a lousy night. Couldn't sing for shit. It was a lousy crowd. I hate LA. All they do is snort coke and talk. La-la-da-da-da...la-la. Yeah, I recognize that. I like that. I wish Chick was here. Tsk. Maybe I'll get a job in Amsterdam. Chick loved it there. Everyone does. They really know how to treat a jazz person there. How was your night? How'd your hand do? I remember, Chick damn near cut his finger off once. It was in Kansas City. And he was working with Anita O'Day, and, uh--I forget. And he punched the window of a car out 'cause he'd left the keys inside. That was really a hard time for him to play because...the cut was on his slide hand. It kept opening up. And I knew it hurt him. And when I saw that guy walk in that club--(Chuckles) I knew it wasn't gonna hurt much longer. (Chuckles) (Lies down on the bed) He walked straight to Chick. Chick bent down....looked up at me and smiled. He said "Five minutes. Five minutes." Well, I'd heard that before. Five hours later I got a phone call..Could I please come and get my old man 'cause...he'd O.D.'d and they didn't want him in the house. So...I got there as fast as I could. And--(sighs) he was turning blue.....(Sings) Blue....And wrapped in sorrow....blue....Like there's....no...(Falls alsleep).....
