Summary
Charlie Allnut is a rough-and-ready Canadian boat captain working in East Africa during the Great War. He delivers mail and supplies to British Methodist missionaries Samuel and Rose Sawyer with his boat the "African Queen". Samuel Sawyer dies and Charlie agrees to take Rose back to civilization. During their hard journey she even convinces him to attack a German warship with their steamboat.
The two characters have opposite personalities. He is a drunk, free-spirited loner and she is a religious and bossy woman.
