The survivors of a plane crash are stranded in a mysterious, remote tropical island in the South Pacific. Among the survivors there is Jack, a doctor, Kate, a former prisoner, Charlie, a rock star, Sayid, an Iraqi military man, Locke, a mysterious man who used to be paralyzed before the crash but is miraculously cured after the crash and Claire, a pregnant Australian girl. The series alternates present events with flashbacks of the background stories of the characters.

In this episode the flashback deals with an episode in Sayid's life. During the war in Iraq Sayid used to be part of the Republican Army and was a torturer. Years after the war Sayid works in a restaurant in Paris. Amira, a woman that he tortured during the war, recognizes him and her husband kidnaps Sayid. She asks him to admit that he tortured her but Sayid tells her he doesn't remember her face. In this scene Amira, after telling Sayid a story of how she rescued a cat from some kids that were torturing it, asks him to admit what he did to her.
